Information Strategy

Practical Taxonomy Development

1 day Workshop

19th January 9:00 am-4:00 pm

Birmingham

Workshop overview

More and more organisations are finally waking up to the fact that in order to find, share, publish and re-use their content they need to use semantic tools such as taxonomies. But what do we mean by ‘taxonomy', and how exactly can it improve findability? What are the properties of a good taxonomy, and how do we build one that is fit for purpose?

In this course, you will learn about the different kinds of semantic structures that come under the taxonomy umbrella (thesauri, vocabularies, facets, navigational taxonomies, ontologies, etc) and the contexts in which each can be used most effectively. It is aimed at individuals who want to know more about the purpose, structure and use of taxonomies, those who are considering integrating a taxonomy into their business systems but want to know more about the benefits and practicalities, as well as those who are tasked with developing a taxonomy and want to know where to begin.

A good balance between tools and culture mix. I appreciate the fact that a lot has been packed into the day. It has been stimulating, not rushed.
