Efficiency and Performance Improvement in the Public Sector

1 day Workshop

21st February 9:00 am-4:30 pm

The Studio , 51 Lever street , Manchester , M1 1FN

Workshop overview

The public sector is under increasing pressure to improve efficiency, while preserving high quality services. Although efficiency and improvement have always been on the agenda, the speed and scale of the changes required are proving very hard to meet.

This workshop looks at several ways in which efficiency and improvement could be achieved, building on the latest research and practical evidence in the areas of continuous improvement, lean thinking and performance management.

Workshop aim

Efficiency savings are not cost cutting exercises. Real efficiencies can be made only if we understand how certain activities and processes are performed, and how they could be improved. Also, for any improvement to be achieved, we need to ensure the buy-in of the workforce and that new approaches are embedded in our day-to-day work. This workshop will address the following main questions:

  • How can we improve efficiency while preserving the quality of our services?
  • How can we achieve and sustain improvements over time?
  • How can we engage the workforce and strengthen a culture of performance?

Throughout the workshop, delegates will have an opportunity to experiment with several tools and techniques, and see how they could be applied in their own organisations.

Who will benefit from this workshop?

  • Chief Executives
  • Directorate Heads
  • HR Managers
  • Performance Managers
  • Finance Directors and Financial Controllers
  • Performance Management, Improvement and Delivery Teams
  • Strategy and Policy Planning Units

Workshop content

1. Key principles of lean thinking and continuous improvement
The workshop will start by providing an overview of the main tenets of lean and continuous improvement, and will present evidence of successful implementation of improvement projects in both public and private sector contexts.

2. How to improve processes
The management of processes is fundamental if we are to bring about sustainable improvements in performance. In this session we will look at how to best link continuous improvement, service transformation and performance management.

3. Efficiency and quality
Here we will discuss ways to achieve efficiency savings while improving the quality of services. In particular, we will focus on identifying: different types of waste; ways of ‘getting it right first time'; opportunities for reducing costs and increasing stakeholder value. Delegates will also have the opportunity to experiment with problem-solving tools and techniques.

4. Workforce engagement
Having a committed workforce is necessary for an organisation to learn and continuously improve. In this session we will look at various ways to positively affect behaviours at organisational, team and personal levels.
