Pietro Micheli MSc MRes PhD
Senior Lecturer at Cranfield School of Management
Pietro Micheli is a Senior Lecturer at Cranfield School of Management’s Centre for Business Performance, founding member of the Evidence-based management collaborative (US) and Fellow of the Advanced Institute of Management (AIM) Research. He was awarded a PhD and a Master by Research in Management from Cranfield School of Management, and a Master in Management and Production Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano. Pietro is a chartered engineer in Italy and also studied for a year at the TU Delft, the Netherlands.
His research and consulting interests focus on organisational performance, particularly in the following areas:
1. Performance management:
Pietro has carried out extensive research on the design, use and impact of performance targets and indicators, and in the introduction of performance improvement initiatives in public and private sector organisations. Since 2005 he has been the director of the Cranfield Public sector performance roundtable, a research club whose members are executives, directors and managers coming from organizations across the public sector. In the field of performance management Pietro has worked with, and consulted to, a number of organisations, including: Abu Dhabi Government, Audit Commission, Council of Europe, Department of Health, House of Lords, National Audit Office, The Pensions Regulator, Amec, British American Tobacco, British Energy, KLM, Morgan Carbon, Orange, Shell and Veolia Water. In 2010 he worked as Director of the Italian Commission for public sector evaluation in Rome.
2. Innovation management:
In the field of innovation management Pietro is currently doing research on the different forms of collaboration between public and private sector organisations. Previously, he participated to a multi-disciplinary research project on the perceptions and impact of product design on performance. In 2006-2007 Pietro was part of the Innovation and Productivity Grand Challenge - a major project involving a consortium of five Universities (Cambridge, Cranfield, Imperial College, Liverpool and Loughborough). He also organised three 'Connecting research with industry' international conferences, held at Cranfield in 2007, in Rome in 2008, and at the OECD in Paris in 2009.
Pietro’s research papers have been published in leading academic journals such as Public Administration Review, the Journal of Product Innovation Management, Research Technology Management and the International Journal of Operations and Production Management. He was also the guest editor of Long Range Planning's special issue on Strategic Performance Measurement (published in 2010).
Pietro is a Visiting Professor at the University of Bologna, has lectured in a number of European academic institutions, run executive courses and workshops, and is a regular speaker at academic and practitioner conferences. He speaks fluent English, Italian, French and Spanish.
